hi
basil our blue betta has been suffering with a very swollen r gill which now has several small white patches around it. it was suggested he may have gill flukes ( he wasnt flicking & the gill does not look red at all)
so i treated with sterazin
which did nothing at all, sp i thought id try antibiotics first tried maracyn then
added maracyn 2, the maracyn 2 seemed to help but didnt cure completely. i felt sorry for basil as the hospital tank was down on the floor and he couldnt see the other fish in our 4ft tank. sorry if this sounds pathetic but the highlight of bas's life is flaring when he spots the tiger barbs and other fish in our 4ft tank next door to his, and i felt sorry for him stuck in a teeny tank with nothing ( except our feet) to look at ( we had nothing we could put his tank on to raise it up - no power points air line for sponge filter etc etc) i also though if hes going to end up dying it would be kinder to let him live his little life in his own tank where hes happy!!! apart form the swollen gill hes very active - eating & still flaring when he sees the girls next door.
anyway im thinking about treating him again with the maracyn 2 which seemed to help but dont
know if its ok to use maracyn 2 in his own tank where he lives with several khulis & 10 amano shrimp

ive tried to get photos of basils problem but its very hard & those i do get you cant really see what it looks like
any help or suggestions most appreciated
thanks

Actually, he's probably less stressed being out of view of the other fish. If he's been constantly flaring at the fish in the other tank then that could have stressed him out, leading to illness. I put a square piece of cardboard between my betta tank and community tank because he was doing the same thing and I was told it wasn't good for him.

Poor Basil - I do hope you manage to find a cure for his gill problem. It does sound like gill disease and if so, the less flaring at this point in time the better as it could be causing him pain and aggravating the illness and thereby hampering recovery.

I would let him have total peace at the moment, with no distractions or reasons to get stressed. Make sure his water quality is tip-top condition with regular water changes.

You could try Pimafix if the white patches look like a fungal issue and Melafix is a natural anti-bacterial that is very popular.

Regards - Athena

hi & thanks athena
bas isnt constantly flaring at the guys next door only now & again. i would try pimafix or melafix but from experience khulis HATE it & go mad if you put it in their tank. when basil was in the small tank he was very listless & looked totally fed up which is why ive moved him back home....but maybe i shouldnt attribute human emotions to him & i shouldbe isolating again!!!
