I am looking into buying a 10 gal tank for a male betta. I was wondering if I could keep in a couple african dwarf frogs or a couple of kuhli loaches

Kuhlis should definitely be fine - just make sure they have lots of hiding spaces (this would be a good idea whether they lived with a betta or not).

I think you said "or", but just in case, I want to add that having both kuhlis and frogs would probably be too much. Also, kuhlis really love to be in groups. Make sure your tank is cycled before you put in a group of them.

Yes I would do only frogs or loaches. also I am just going to use water from my other aquarium or possibly from one of my ponds. I had a kuhli before but he had no other kuhlies. this time I will get him some friends

Also what other things could live in here instead of loaches or frogs? i was considering ghost or cherry shrimps or maybe some kind of small fish that doesn't school

Ghosts would be okay but cherries would get eaten by ADFs.

Depends on the temperment of each betta, some are okay with tank mates, some arent. In any case you need to have all the inhabitants well established BEFORE you put in the betta, or he will see them as invading his territory.

There has been some success with FEMALE guppies mainly, and platies. Avoid anything as big as the betta, as its more likely they will fight. Stay away from gouramis.

Have you considered apple snails? Theyre cute and most bettas tolerate them.

Make sure you fishless cycle properly before adding any fish, frogs or inverts!

i do have an apple snail but his shell is deteriorating due to a lack of calcium and i am treating him. once he is better i will probably add him in

you need to add ALL tankmates BEFORE the betta, or take the betta out and rearrange the tank decor, then pop the tankmate/s back in before the betta.

ok so ill put them in first. the snail unfortunately died today :(

Oh thats a shame :( if you want snails again you'll need either fairly hard water or if you have soft water up the PH with reef bones or clam shells, I asked about this myself recently. Also feed them tums for calcium.

I actually got 3 females and put them before I put in some ghost shrimp after them because I needed something to clean my tank semi...
I did the same for my male crowntail's tank but I haven't put in any other type of fish (mainly because I am trying to breed{the breeding tank doesn't have shrimp in it because I don't need them eating my fries}) as for my Kings well every little buddy I had in there before them they tried eating...

Betta's are perfectly happy on their own though aren't they?

ya I put in some shells and a small coral skeleton. i have a lot of drift wood so my tank is on the acidic side

haha that is true but i wanted to see if i could add a little more to the tank to make it more interesting

Oh yeah me too. I was just checking for me really coz I got one in a kinda emergency and would have liked to put a shoal of Galaxies in there with him (or something similar) but everyone says that the Betta should go in last. So I just wanted to check he won't be lonely on his own :(
