I got a CT betta last week from an LFS. This morning I noticed large silver spots on the front of his dorsal fin and his anal fin. The spot on the dorsal fin is close to symmetrical on left and right sides, but the spot on the anal fin is more pronounced on his right side. The areas have no unusual texture: no fuzziness, sliminess, scale deterioration, or bumpiness. The circumference of the spots are yellowish-green. It reminds me of an oil spot in a puddle of water.
His behavior has not changed. No swimming problems. His belly is not swollen. His appetite is consistent. Saturday he had a bit of dried bloodworms for breakfast. Yesterday and this morning he had betta flakes.
His tank is a 5-gallon Eclipse system with black Tahitian moon sand and live Amazon swords. His only tankmates are Malaysian trumpet snails.
His water is 79 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are at or near zero. pH is 7.0 to 7.1. The tank was cycled with only snails for two months before he went in.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. My poor boy. It's like something just sucked the color right off of him.
UPDATE: As of 7 hours later, the spots have spread throughout his abdomen and half of his dorsal fin. The spotted area of the dorsal fin is stringy and appears to be disintegrating. He is listless and floats around, exerting himself as little as possible.
