I have a blue male betta. I've had him for a month, he's currently in a cycled 3 gallon (I know, I know, it's temporary and I'm going to move him into a 20 gallon when that finishes cycling). He's a stunning blue, or at least he was. Some crimson streaks have shown up in his anal fin and his eyes are changing from blue to red. His eyes are not popping out, he's full of energy, and he's highly interested in food.

I do 50% water changes weekly with a gravel vacuum, he's fed omega one betta flakes once daily, when I tested the ammonia yesterday it was at .25 ppm (I did an immediate water change) but today's test has it at 0. No nitrates/-ites. pH is 7 and I don't yet have a hardness measurement. He has a heater and a filter and the tank is planted. Water temperature is 78 F/25 C.

I'd love to get a picture but he won't stay still long enough for me to actually get a clear one. He is growing and his fins have started filling out, I'm just worried that he may be sick. He's my first betta and I'm really worried about him. What could be going on? Could it be fin rot? I'm so worried.

He has lost some of the white he had when I first got him, the tips of his tail and fins were white and they've since gone blue. He's also gained some green, if that helps. I have no idea what's going on!!

Without a pic it would be difficult to say if it is just normal colour changes or something else but from your description of his behaviour I would be more inclined to say it is just normal colour changes.

No lumps, no bulging. I can try again to get a picture soon. Thank you guys. I'll post pictures as soon as I can manage.

Here he is. Sorry it took me so long. He'd move every time I got ready to take a picture! I hope this posts right, I'm using my phone!

Edit: Or my phone won't do it. Hang on...

It may be hard to see, but the dark streaks on his anal fin is the red I'm talking about. It's not showing up well on my computer screen...

I can't see it clear enough to tell, he looks fairly well though from what I can see, lovely chap, is he a halfmoon? we don't really get them in the lfs here in the UK sadly, just make sure you keep up with the water changes in such a small tank to keep the ammonia at bay and he should be fine.

The red in your boy's fins just look to be coloring.  This is referred as "red wash" and for most breeders is not optimal when breeding for solid colors because it is persistent and hard to get rid of -- most often seen on blue bodied fish.  The white on the ends of your boy's fins are also normal and is referred to as a butterfly pattern.  He may or may not keep those white edges since the butterfly pattern is linked to "marbling" which means the betta can unexpectedly change colors.
IMO your boy looks and from your description sounds very healthy.  Your tank husbandry also sounds really good too so I wouldn't worry too much about him.  Also the 3 gallon is just fine for him so no worries while you are setting up the bigger tank.  ;)

Thank you guys so much! That makes me feel better. And yes, he is a halfmoon!

He looks perfectly healthy!

My betta, "Indigo," also was all blue when I got him about six months ago. Now he has dark red in his fins similar to yours.
