I was considering getting a betta only I wanted more than one fish, and I was under the impression bettas could really only be by themselves or with a small frog of some sort. I just read that some good tank mates would be dwarf gouramis, head & tail lite tetras, moons, mollies, catfish, or a small red tail shark. Would you agree with that and if so, would they need a large tank? Say, dwarf gouramis and a red tail shark with a betta...

Bettas would fight with dwarf gouramis, get chewed up by tetras, and get beat up by a RTS. Cories would work, and I don't keep livebearers so I don't really know anything about them :) You could keep a betta nd three cories in a ten gallon.

frogs eat fish once they get bigger....so i'd say frogs are bad.

i don't know about alot of the fish you posted, but i think a gourami is a no...i don't remember.

white cloud minnows are good...worked for me....but don't get surpae(sp?) tetras....those killed my pretty pink betta

corycats and otto's are cool...

red tail black sharks grow to 8 inches so they won't stay small for long

gouramis will most likely fight with bettas. Tetras will most likely nip at the betta's fins

corys are peaceful and small and stay on the bottom. a small pleco would be ok i guess as would otos.

I also read that you could put head and taillight tetras with a betta as long as it is at least a 2 gallon tank. :p

I had bettas with:

Frogs
tetra
guppies

and never had a problem with nipping or attacks what so ever.

I think it depends on the fish, conditions and size of tank to be honest.

with the frog, i think it depends on the frog, not the fish....my sister lost all her fish except a couple plecos and a huge carnival goldfish. she had neon tetras, some sharks, and a couple other things....all gone cuz of the frog....but he sure is huge now

That is because the frog is most likely the larger African Clawed Frog (ACF) which should never be kept with fish. They also need a larger tank than a betts. I understand that the docile African Dwarf Frog (ADF) is a fine tankmate for a betta, or any other fish. Two is better than one, but they can be kept in smaller tanks and will not harm the fish. I'm about to populate by small tank with two ADFs and a betta. Will probably go for a female since the tank is heavily planted to provide frog cover and there may not be enough open space for a large-finned male.
