My male Betta has just been laying around at the bottom of the tank..
He still eats normally, swims fine, but he just sits there doing nothing..
I noticed yesterday his fins were a bit tatty, and because he was spending a lot of time on the gravel, I removed it - just until he gets better.
I tested the water, and all it fine..
Anyone have any ideas why he might be at the bottom of the tank all the time?

How do I help cure his boredom?
Would adding other fish to the tank help motivate him a bit more?

How old is the Betta? (not only how long you've had him, but his stage of life) quite a lot of Bettas in pet stores are OLD by the time the pet store gets them... Which means they are definite senior citizens by the time we have owned them for a while. Which means if they are acting like they are OLD, they very well could be. :) it certainly would answer the question why they aren't as sprightly as they used to be.

Obviously, first look for illness signs, then try to eliminate boredom (another Betta tanked separately but within his line of sight will let him get some safe social interaction... My Bettas all have their own "apartments" and they socialize with eachother -SAFELY- by being able to display and "defend" their territories... Even if there is no possibility of them hurting eachother, they still seem to enjoy "going through the motions", but don't forget the possibility that they may be ready for the retirement village.

Honestly, I have no idea how old he is....
It's possible that he is getting old - he's not exactly a small Betta.
I know I have owned him for about 4-5 months, but as for his actual age I don't know :/

Lady thats acc a good idea id never of thought of that ive done all these animal caurses on makeing an animals life happy and healthy but didnt thick of a bettas natural life lol

I am buying another 2 tanks and another 1 male on one side and females on the other god great ideas and not even my thread lol

I am having this same thing happen with mine.

Usually he just dont stop swimming around.
and lately i have caught him hiding under the coconut, which he never did before, sitting amongst the plants and just lying on the bottom.
He does have a bump on his side, which could be the cause of this.
But other than the staying at the bottom hes perfectly fine.

He was a juvenile when i got him, and i've had him around 4-6 months now.

Depends how big the tank is I have him in a 2.5 gallon heated tank and I have a little cave he likes to explore around in.

LOL conversations often evolve that way!
My boyfriends Betta, Captain America, was kind of depressed in his 5g til the day he divided the tank and added Skyrim the HM feathertail... Now the two boys blow bubble nests and "patrol the borders".

I've noticed my boys get really excited if I change their neighbors, they swim up and down the "border land" and size eachother up, do some occasional flaring (it's not constant) and blow bigger bubble nests (as if they are trying to impress eachother!) then after a week or two they seem to "get bored" with eachother and stop showing off so on "chores day" they get shuffled about... The girls really love getting switched to be next to the boys, my girls are very flirty and "social" (at least by the Unique Betta definition of that term!) but I definitely find the switch ups reinvigorate them.

Yeh my girl is alittle filirty she acts all u wont this dont u
And my male was like yes please then she would slowly swim off and hide but so she could still see him

I even saw my female flaring her fins an gills at him when he was swimming to impress her you know their wiggle lol
