Hi there all.
I am looking for someone who can help me through a new experience. I loved the look of Betta simplex and decided to go out on a limb and order some off the internet. Now I am expecting them to arrive as soon as next week and want to know what I don't already know as a generic fish keeper. I understand things like the nitrogen cycle and general principles of fish care but really want to know what to expect with this new fish care experience. Is there anything that I can do to make the new tank more likely to be successful? I expect to be able to house the pair in a cycled 10 gallon based on what I have found on the International betta congress web site, especially since they recommend a 2.5 gallon for a simple pair of B. simplex.
I do have some frozen once-live food available as frozen foods if it is needed but as a livebearer specialist I am used to using those things as rare treats. Do I need to feed these new charges a completely different diet to what I give my livebearers? Will they prosper in the 10 gallon that is over-sized compared to the references that I have found thus far?
I am desperate for the right answers since I take the health and well being of my charges very seriously. My new bettas are going to be a very important part of my breeding program going forward and I am at a loss when it comes to proper care for them. If it were an unknown livebearer, I would be far more comfortable because I know how, in general terms, to care for a new livebearer. A wild type betta is completely foreign to me though. I have had success breeding splendens in the past, but who hasn't?
