i was under the impression that siamese fighting fish referred to the betta splendens variety only, but i saw this auction on ebay advertising Betta Pugnax as siamese fighting fish. Am i mistaken? Or is the seller incorrect for describing them in this way

There not a fighting fish their common name is "Giant mouthbrooding betta"
What the lister is doing is by putting that when people search for fighting fish that auction will come up as well to try to get more people looking.

How ever I've never kept them so don't know anything about the care of them

Betta pugnax is a type of betta but they are not fighting fish. The Betta genus has a number of species including: B. pugnax, B. imbellis, B. splendes (Siamese fighter) & B. coccinia. They are all labyrinth fishes and have the ability to breath air from the atmosphere. They are related to gouramis.

B. pugnax is quite a peaceful fish that shows parental brood care. The males incubate the eggs in their mouth and release the young when they have hatched. They grow to about 4inches and have a brownish body with an iridescent blue/green dot on each scale. Truly a lovely fish that does not get enough attention.
