Betta Problems Arrrrrrrrrhhhhh

as i said yesterday i brought 3 female fighters from a fish shop and put them into my tank......the so called female i had in my tank went crazy flaring up just like a male then waving its rear in a fanning motion.....i brought her a while ago in a tank mark female fighters.........when i phoned my lfs this morning and exsplained what happened and described her he said she was a he..........so i bagged up the three and gave them to my sister who had 1 female in a tank now they seem fine with no flaring at all........ these are pics of so called female<not at all gr8>sorry...........any ideas please advise me....

I'm confused. Did you re-bag the 3 you bought the other day and then let your sister release those 3 into her tank? Or did you bag up the 3 that were not acting like males and release them into your sister's tank? If you have one that's being overly aggressive, even if it's still female, you need to separate him/her and put them by themself. That is always the risk one takes when putting together a community of female bettas.

iam now left with the origanal one.............three from yesterday gone to sisters tank........my tank has only this one left which has up until yesterday and again now been really chilled.........just wanted to know if its male or female,,,,,,,, B)

Oh, so you thought you had always had a female, but then he started acting like a male. (please excuse the confusion--I just woke up!) Well, the easiest way to tell is to see when he eats or sees other bettas does a little white dot appear on his stomach. If it does, it's the ovipositor and he's a she. But, if he is acting super aggressive, like I said before, whether he's actually a boy or girl doesn't matter, he/she still needs to be by themselves then. Although I've never seen a female do the love dance (the tail waggin you discribed). Perhaps you just have a plakat male. Hope I've been helpful, sorry about the mornning grogginess....perhaps I shouldn't answer posts in the morning....

lol grumpy you sound just like me in mornings........ never seen any white spots before.......in the tank is 2 angels/3 xray tetras/2 platys/and it............they get on fine and are now fine again.......thats what i thought plankat......its lovely so dont want to rid of him/her..........also just feed the females at my sisters and a white syst style spot is under them<is that the spot?>thanks for help..........enjoy ya day B)

That is a male betta, the ventrals are longer than in the females and it is a plakat.

If it is a female it shouldn't have such long ventrals.

Either way check for the white ovipositor which is just under it's tummy.

The only way to tell if it is a girl or boy is to look underneath the ventral for the egg spot. It will look like a small white dot...it's unmistakable.

Girls can have just as long fins and ventrals as some boys...that is definately not how you should sex them, the egg spot is the most reliable source.

I have a female veil that did the body dance when she was with other females. Very aggressive are female veils so she is on her own.
