I got my first Betta a male, few days back for about 51 cents, it has beautiful black, violet and peacock blue colours it dosent look like a prize winner but is still very pretty, did I get it really cheap becasue I have seen some on the net going for 55 dollars.

Also its living in harmony in a 5 gallon tank with a small Gold fish, an Angel and a Cory Cat, no nipping or flared fins, infcat it seems to have been subdued by the hyperactive Gold fish.

yes it is cheap

but more to the point, an angel shouldn't be in a 5g! angels need atleast 30g with the right dimensions..

Yes that is a good deal. But standard VT's usually go for around $3-5. The $50 fish are usually exotic types from thailand.

On another note tho... your tank setup is an ABSOLUTE NO!

An angel will grow WAY too big for a tank that size. You need around 30 gallons as a minimum. They are aggressive as well and the betta and angel will end in disaster.

Goldfish are NOT tropical fish and require entirely different water conditions. Also, WAY too messy for a 5 gallon and will be too big for a tank that size.

A goldfish alone in a tank that size is overstock. An angel in that tank alone is overstocked. And throw into the mix that you now have a betta in there with incompatible tank mates. Your going to kill your fish!

You are very lucky then..... First angels and bettas usually 99.9 % of the time don't get along. Second mixing types of fish is not a very good idea. Tropical fish and goldfish need diffrent things. Bettas and other tropicals like warm water, gold fish and corys like it cooler. Third I like goldfish also but they are very very messy, and will foul the water in a tank quick. No good for his tank mates.

As far as the notion that bettas LIKE to live in tiny containers is incorrect, the fact is they can survive in small containers. There is a big diffrence between likeing to live in something and being able to survive in something. I could live in my bedroom closet for the rest of my life but trust me I wouldn't like it.

Take the money you saved on your betta and buy a some new tanks. My suggestion is get a bigger tank for the angel and also get a new tank for your betta. Nothing smaller then 2 1/2 gallon tank , also get a 25 watt heater. Bettas need the water to be between 76 and 80 degrees.

You can get a good betta - suitable tank very cheap with heater, filter - everything, so you may want to really think about this. (£30 for one here with net/food/heater/filter + tank/gravel) which is about $55-$60 i think
