hi i got a new male betta the other day and he has kill one of his tank mates it was a rosy red minnow :-( i think it was a male is this a commony thing for a betta male to do i know that they attack there own kind or other fish that look like them but i did not know that he would attact the rosy red minnows and he has not touched the other two who i think r female and my be going to have fri

i want to know should i try to swap him for a less aggressive betta male ?

Bettas are most often best kept alone, they are solitary fish and often dont get on well with tank mates

Like anything else, a fish's attitude can vary from one to another. I had a male betta that started in a 2.5gallon tank, then i got a baby pleco to add a "friend" to the tank, then i got a 10 gallon tank shortly afterwards so I could more easily get filtration and a heater in there, then that turned into a 30 gallon tank about 6 months later. My betta loved his 10 gallon tank and got along just fine with the pleco, then when the new tank was stable I switched them to that one and added, slowly, other community fish that wouldnt harrass my betta (since the upgrades were more for him than anything else) I never had issues with him attacking other fish in the 30 gallon but then again he got used to other fish slowly and my tank was no where near heavily populated, and filtration was considerate for Vaughn (my betta) so that there wasnt much of a current. Point is, I've had people tell me that no matter how slowly they tried to adjust their bettas they always were aggressive towards other fish, so who knows!
You'll never go wrong with "listening" to what he's trying to tell ya :good:

:good: thanx for what i can tell what u r tell me is it just might take time for him to get use to his new home as he went from the small jar the lfs had him in to my 5 gal tank hummm but now i wonder if he needas more space so the other fish dont get in he's way ?

Keeping a betta with other fish is always a risk and if it's not working you should remove him and give him his own tank. I don't think juiced1300 was saying that your betta will get used to his home. Is it five gallons with a betta and rosy red minnows? That doesn't sound like enough space to me. Bettas are terrortorial. It may work better in a bigger tank, but it may be the case that your betta is just one who won't get along with other fish.

I would seperate him. If he's already killed one, he will kill more.

the rosy minnow was likely teasing his fins and the betta turned on him. i wouldnt keep a male beta with minnow/danio type fish, they just seem to wind them up!!
