heya guys,

iv got a small hexagonal tank knocking around with no purpous at all... i think its about 5 gallons (~its 25cm tall 20cm and 30cm wide at the widest point as it is hexagonal) i have never worked it out. It has a small heater but no filter. I am going to my lfs tomorrow to pick up a new fish for my community tank and i have been looking into getting a betta. Now iv read a lot of different stuff about filters, and current etc and im a bit confused. I have got mature filter media to put in a filter but i dont know what to get.. any advice?

thanks a lot.

Tom

newbie...not noob :) .
um, let's see.

one, from where i've read, the bettas prefer longer tanks over higher ones, which as i've noticed with my fish in tanks like that, the one in the longer tank swims alot more than the one in the taller one.

two, the filters. i don't have filters in my betta's tanks, i just give them a thorough water change and cleaning every sunday, along with my 10g community tank. they do perfectly fine without filters. i wouldn't know much about filters though because i've never had a betta in with a filter.

three, cycling it? can you do that with out a filter? if so, you'll need to cycle it before putting the betta in like a normal tank (from what i've read on other topics posted in here.)

I use the Fluval 1 filters in my fighter tanks, they cost about £15.
