I read you can keep one male betta in a community tank, just as long as the other fish don't look like that or have simliar coloring. but my question is, what fish? could i get swordies? I also saw a picture with a betta in with guppies, is that possilbe? What about Dwarf Gouramis? and any other fish.

You'd probably get more answers in the betta forum.
Personally I wouldn't put a male betta with anything besides bottomfeeders, I just feel that top dwellers would be in his territory causing him to attack (this is just my theory).
I wouldn't put one with neither guppies or gouramis, and I would avoid livebearers and tetras. Loaches, cories, snails, african dwarf frogs, plecos and ottos might work. What size is your tank? I wouldn't try a male betta with anything in less then a 10 gallon tank.

Bettas in a community tank are risky. Not only will he probably attack anything with a big tail (guppies, angels) but quite a few community fish may attack him. My son and daughter-in-law had a male betta in their 20 gallon community tank with some harlequins, danios and corys for over a year without any problem. Then one day they came home and he was almost tailess and finless. They had to put him in a q-tank to recover. They still don't know what attacked him.

Well first off, it must've been the Danios, cause the can be very nippy at times.

I have a betta male in with 2 danios, 1 angelfish, 6 neons, 2 swordtails and two bleeing hearts. they get along fine. Do not put any type of large tetra in there I had one adn had to move him to another tank he was nipping evryone.

I wouldn't recommend a tank as large as 90-100 gallons for a betta -- with their heavy finnage, they tend to get tired swimming to the surface.

Personally, as others have said, I'd only keep bettas with cory cats, otos, or other "bottom feeder" type fish.

Aren't bleeding heart tetras considered to be a large tetra though?

Most all tetras tend to get nippy when they aren't in schools. Some more so than others.

I wouldn't risk it. Most of the bettas I have have spent time in the community tank, all sustained a few nips, and all got territorial after a few weeks. Its far easier and safer not to bother, you don't have to keep worrying then and you can put whatever you like in the tank (within reason, of course)

IMO cories are a Bettas best friend.
Most betta keepers i know keep cories with them and they get along just fine

Ok. Well, would someone answer this question?

Can Bettas and Dwarf Gouramis get along?
