I have a 36 US Gallon tank and an AC50 filter --- there is a bit of current that makes its way through the tank, but my question is so long as the Betta has some place to escape the current, is he alright? I'll obviously observe him, but just wanted thoughts.

Yeah. If the current is too strong you can point the outlet to the side of the tank to disperse the current. I have a strong powerhead in my tank but my betta generally stays at the other side of the tank and has a corner on the opposite side that he claims as his own. Hes in a community and does fine :)

I have a HOB filter so I can't direct the output. Guess I'll see how he does

You could always get a mesh (for needlepoint or whatever it's called. Sold where you can get hobby stuff. And it's cheap) to put on the filter to help the flow if it's too strong. I did this for one of my tanks and it worked perfectly. Doesn't hinder the flow at all, just helps reduce how strong it is.

The current isn't as strong as I had thought as he doesnt seem to be bothered by it!

I like my HOB filter that I recently bought, it's just unlike any other filter that I have as the current goes vertical rather than horizontal. My Betta usually avoids the small area where the filter deposits the water but just sometimes he get's a lazy and swims past it and instantly gets pushed down to the substrate, sometimes he even chances it slowly approaching it as slow as possible until he just goes too far. It's funny to watch but I have little sympathy as there is about another 10gallons of water which is calm.
