Hey ya'll. I was thinking about getting a five gallon tank to set up with bettas. I have a 29 and 10 gallon already but I've never had betta. I've heard that you can have guppies or mollies with female bettas. Is this true? What would be a good compatibility for betta. Any help is appreciated. thanks.

Hi om and Welcome to our beginners section!

You are a perfect candidate to try a thread over in the betta subforum. There you would probably get more responses from people who are more practiced with the best practices of keeping bettas! If that doesn't help please be sure to come back here as I'm sure a bunch of us could help in various ways too!

Bettas would do well with guppies and mollies even a male betta(I have a tank right now that has guppies, mollies, and a male betta) bettas do fine with a lot of other kinds of fish, just don't keep them with gouramis. For your five gallon I would recomend only having two bettas, mabye three, bettas though. And you should make it be all females (or one male and two females) because males will just kill each other in that small of a space.

You should either keep 1 male betta or 1+ female betta. Mixing either a male with another male or any females is asking for disaster. If the males mind turns to breeding he will harrass the female betta's to death and then probably start harrassing anything else in the tank.
