Hi

My betta's gill is sticking out weirdly. Behind it you can see it is very red. there doesn't seem to be anything behind the flap of skin, no swelling. It is as if she has cuaght it and torn it, but she is in a betta friendly tank and I can see nothing that could have caused an injury. I think this has been worsening over the last week, she has looked a little odd but just as if she were flaring lopsidedly.

Tank stats are spot on, tested earlier. No ammo or nitrite. Tank has been gravel vacced today and water changed 5 days ago. Tank is divided into 3, other 2 bettas are fine.

Any signs of rubbing and flicking as though something is irratating the fish.
If not I would treat it as bacterial gillrot.
Any excess slime on the gills.

No rubbing or flicking at all, no slime. What should I use for bacterial gillrot? Is anti internal bacteria treatment OK? I better get my quarantine tank out. Thanks Wilder!

Yes.
Anti internal bacteria med by interpet treats gill rot get you some info.

Aquarium Treatment - No 9 Anti Internal Bacteria 100ml
Aquarium Treatment - No 9 Anti Internal Bacteria 100ml. Advanced formula aquarium treatment complete with handy measuring cap and pipette. Also comprehensive, easy to follow guide to fish health. Cures bacterial gillrot, dropsy and ulcers.
Evidence of internal bacterial infection is red streaks to the fins and red patches or blotches on the body of the fish. Can be very hard to treat and this is one of the few chemicals on the market which attempts a cure.

Worth a try to save your prize specimen or that family friend. 100ml treats 500 litres (110 gallons.)

Also take a look here to see what you think.

is there enough aeration in the tank.
Also can't betta have a blow out of the gill whatever that means.
Have you done a thread in the betta section.

Hi Wilder

I'm using a sponge filter in the tank, it blows out a bubble every 2 seconds or so.

I did wonder if it was a blow out but this is a girl betta, I didn't imagine it was that likely... dunno. have also posted in the betta section, in the meantime she is in the q tank with interpet no 9. Fingers crossed, Loki is a favourite. Thanks Wilder :)

If water quality excellent and no signs of flicking and rubbing against objects, or excess mucas as I would treat it as bacterial.
Good luck bless her.

I am very particular about my water stats :p and definitley no flicking or rubbing to date... and I think this has been coming on slowly for a while. And no mucus or anything - just a sticky-out gill with redness behind it. Loki is NOT impressed to be in the q tank, lol. Fingers crossed for her, i love this fish as a child :S Yeah, i am that sad!

There nothing sad about caring for animals and mammals.
I loved tweety my fancy goldfish to bits but sadly he died bless him.
Good luck hope she better soon.

Hows the betta doing.

Hi Wilder. Thanks for asking! The gill seems to be laying a tiny bit flatter. Still red behind it but Loki is swimming round as usual and eating, so looking good so far. Hopefully the meds are starting to work. I really hope so, i just want her better and back in her usual tank. Do you think I should treat the other bettas as a precaution? They look fine but I would hate them to get sick too.

The best thing for the other tank is daily water changes for a few days.
Best not to over use meds as they build a resistance up to them so don't work when you really need them.

Glad there some slight improvement.
Don't like to build my hopes up to much as they look like there getting better only to go downhill again.
