Hi Everyone,

I’ve had a healthy beta for about a year now. I’ve been keeping him in a small 1.5 gallon tank with no heater and no filtration. Recently, I purchased a 5 gallon tank with a nice little heater and a good filter. I plan to move my fish, Marlin, into this tank in a few days time. But my problem is I would also like to add another few fish to the 5 gallon tank. What fish coexist well with Betas? Also, what tips do you have for keeping healthy betas?

Thanks,

Mr. Marlin

in a 5g your limited to no fish, but maby a snail or two.

watch your filter, you said it had good filtration. bettas dont like water movement, so make sure he isnt bieng thrown around the tank.

Only snails? Oh, ok thanks. Any specific type? Once again, thank for the advice ...

Here is a thread that has just a little bit of information but, better than nothing.

So there are really no good tank mates for Betas besides snails? What requirements do snails take to keep? What do they eat??

there are lots of good tankmates for bettas. just not in a 5g tank.

snails will eat algae, left over food, algae wafers, and "snail biscuts".

Do they have any special needs? I`m not sure if I thanked you for your advice up to this point, and I would, in fact, like to do so now. Thank you.

snails, no. they are kinda easy to take care of. just make sure you feed them aglae wafers and snail biscuts.

in a 5g you could hvae a adf with him or 3 otos.I would go for a adf there so kool.I think 3 otos would be pushng it.Especialyif bettas are better off with non or very little filtration power.

3 ottos? are you serious? they need 5g each.ADF are good accept they do nothing but sit on the bottom.if your going to get one make sure its not a ACF as it will kill the betta.. http://www.fishlore.com/profiles_otocinclus.htm

Hey,

After a bit of research, I`ve deiced I don`t want to keep snails. Any other ideas ...?

nope, im sorry but theres no other fish that could posably be put in a 5g with a betta.

you could always divide the tank (you can go to the hardware store and pick-up an 8X10 sheet or lexan or plexi. I recommend lexan over plexiglass b/c it doesn't splinter. Infact the whole tank is made of lexan and i have never had algae b/c the tank is made of lexan). Drill some 1/8-1/4" holes into the lexan for filter / water circulation. I have a macaquarium I built (approx a little over 3 gallons) that is split between a male and female betta. Its cute how they interact

I have ghost shrimps (about 7) and a snail in the tank. The ghost shrimp act as a clean-up crew / snack (i started with 10 ghost shrimp, there are at least 3 missing). So you could get a female so your male has someone to interact with and then maybe some shrimp for clean-up duty / midnight snack for the fishies
