Betta Fish Eating Weirdly

My new female Betta Luna is in a heavily planted 5 gallon tank, and sometimes when she eats she kind of flares her gills and will spit the food out a couple times. Its usually with pellets, so I'll give her flakes then. But she doesn't like the flakes very much, but she will eat them. Any reason why she does this? Should I try smaller pellets?

She’s tasting it to see if it’s to her liking or maybe the hardness and texture isn't quite to her liking . Fish can be finicky if they get a change in their food .
