Im getting a Betta in about a months time. But wanted to get my facts straight before I get one... Searching through the Betta forum I see alot of FinRot or Whitespot... Are they prone to get these? As Im keeping him in a comminuty tank I wouldnt want it spreading all over the tank. Also how will I know if its Finrot or just him biting his tail, and why do they bite there tail. Another Question I wanted to ask is I was going to put a small conunut shell is the corning of the tank with loads of different plants around it. Would this be fine for him to hide? So if needed he can get away from the other fish. What temp do they like (27?) Any other information that you think I might need would be great thanks... :hyper:

Every fish is prone to whitespot, its a difficult thing to control. So be prepared for that, get medication in just in case.
Fin rot, you might have more of a problem with than others because you're putting him in a community. What fish are in there with him?

Spreading it, quarantine is a must for a community tank. If you just plop him in there without checking him out for a week or two then you're full community will be affected.

Personally, I'd have him in his own space.

I know that any fish can have whitespot but others get it more then some. Clown loachs for example.

I'll be putting the Betta in with 2 catfish and 2 plecos. And a mixture of plattys and tetras (No tetras that will nip him)
Sadly I do not have the space for another tank just for him. Other wise I probaly would.

Unfortunately, all tetras will nip. In my experience anyway.
I'm NOT completely sure about the platys, but I would think a male would confuse them cos of colours. I know with my first betta he was in with platys and all but one were dead by morning.

When I had to mvoe me old betta to the bigger tank downstairs. That was full of different tetras and he got on fine with them, and they are in the same tank with tetras at my local shop. The shop said, as long as i say away from Barbs, Guppys and glowlight tetras and danios I should be fine. Or anything thats really colourful. I was going for all female plattys anyways as I dont want them to breed. I suppose its a trail and error thing with him. If one dies you not he isnt happy with it.

I've always had problems with VT or CT bettas in community tanks, however, I did have a PK male that hated being alone and spent his whole life in my community tank with Angels & Gouramis. :good:

But, the shop keeper is telling you porkies. All tetras are nippy, not just to bettas - they'll have a go at angels etc as well.
Barbs are terrible, I hated having them - ended up giving them away.

Anyway, why don't you just get a big team of female bettas instead of all those fish. Bettas are prettier :p

Oh :( Thats a shame I was looking forward to them all...

I would get females but you cannot keep females and male together unless breeding for a hour a time... The male will go for the female.

I got to put him in with a commuinty tank, as I really want one and my mom wouldnt go lightly on buying my a 2.5ft tank to spilt into 3 or 4 sections to put male bettas in... So what could I have with him without him getting hurt or other fish that much. Im alright for the odd kill from him, but not all my fish at once  And some fish that isnt too big to go into my 2.5 ft tank

You can try the platys, I've just had a bad experience of it :)
As for other tankmates, it's trial and error. Guppies, tetras, barbs I'd stay away from. Anything else with long flowing fins or colourful large-ish fins. ie Angels, Gouramis are a potential problem as they can be territorial.

Thanks for the help. I knew you had to stay away from tail nippers (They will nip the betta) long fined fish (Betta will nip them) Bright colours (Betta will think its another male) I think I will still get a few Harlquins and see how it goes... I dont believe my tank would be big enough for gouramis. And Angels I was going to get but now changed my mind for a Betta. :shifty:
