So cute. Around a month or so, I had brought home a blue VT who seemed a bit under the weather. Since then, he was so-so then became more ill. . .I nursed him back. He's in a smaller home, but has a heater and regular water changes. The deal is I had moved him into my bathroom so I could do the water changes more easily (and have decided to keep him in there). He's on the counter and I had slipped paper between the glass and the mirror so he couldn't see himself even thought he has NEVER EVER flared. . .

Well, last night while I walked in and turned on the light. . .the paper had slipped down, so the first thing the betta (name is "blue") did was swim right up to the mirror and flare at himself. It was SOOOO cute. I covered the mirror back up but then my husband came in and I had to show him. We laughed and laughed at how adorable his swimming and flaring was.

I take it he's health is probably back to good because of his flaring? What a cute little guy! Last night he was given bloodworms for dinner :)

I wish I could rescue more :)

Aww thats great! :D Well i always think of it as if their ill they wont put the effort and energy into flaring, but if there alright they wont mind using energy to flare :D What size tank is he in? How baout some pics of him ?:D

Here he is. This photo was taken right after I brought him home and I had used the flash in the shot so his colors really pop out. I just took a few more including one with him flaring, but they all turned out blurry. I'll work on getting some more later on. Don't want to stress him out too much with the flaring.

What are the red verticle lines on his gills? Are those ammonia burns or just part of his coloring?

Oh, and he's in a 2-gallon bowl. Since that photo, I've changed out the purple colored rocks for uncolored/plain gravel because I could see the paint chipping off of the gravel. . .thought the paint may be toxic. . .also, he has a hydro mini-heater.

Thanks.

mine was the same i had him for about 6 months before he flared. you really need to get it out of that 2g it is way to small espesially when it dosnr have a fillter and evan with daily water changes i bet there will still be ammonia. you need atleat a 3g but a 5 g would be alot better for him and you because you wouldnt have to do as many waterchanges. you can get 5g tanks of ebay and at carboot sales for just a few £.

I was just poking around in my files and found this other picture. This is of my other male. . .looks like he's flaring a bit in this photo. Never caught that before.

He also started out in a bowl with colored rocks. Now he's in a 5-gallon with the standard smooth natural gravel.

Yep, one step at a time. I'm working on it. I just moved my other one to his five gallon and am finishing up his set up (he has his new filter and I'm finishing up on collecting items for the 16" wide hood stuff - not as easy to find as for 10 gallon tanks). . .then the other Betta is next.

I'm not sure if you saw my question above. I'm wondering about the red verticle lines on his gills? My female betta has those too. . .she's in a 10-gallon.

they get them when there happy or muture
and have you got a lid or are you still looking for one?

Right now I have the heater and filter installed at the back and then the hood with flourecent light still in the box sitting diagonally across the top of the tank. The hood assembly needs a specific glass top to put under it to keep the water from splashing into the open light assembly. I'm picking that up from the store either today or tomorrow. I wanted a light set up that was enclosed but couldn't find one that used flourecent light bulbs, only incondescent. . .I called and/or visited all the pet stores over the last week before settling for my second choice. Everything has to be covered up by Friday when we have company over (with kids).

So the lines may mean two of the betta may be older :( The female is still so small. Hopefully she's just happy.

Thanks.
