I bought my bettas (female and male, male is rare white-pearly colour) just yesterday, and the male is flaring a lot at the female.

i was cleaning the tank and thought bubbles had just collected at the top, but realised after web searches that this was Pearl's nest, and ive destroyed most of it without realising. he seems to be trying to build another one, but very slowly (only a couple of bubbles), have i discouraged him?

and the lady fish swims away from him while he flares, as if wanting to chase, but he just gives up. is this a bad sign?

males and females should NOT be kept together, only when breeding and you must do tonnes of reasearch before hand which it sounds like you haven't done, you must seperate them immediately or they could kill each other

i know, they were together in the breeder's place as theyre a mated couple. the people there said theyd live together permanantly fine.

i take it there not Betta splendens then, do you know what species they are?

apparently hes some sort of hybrid which took a lot of breeding to get his colour, but he doesnt look like a splenden, and hes not aggressive towards any of the smaller fish in the tank.

well i have no experience with other betta types so can't help you there and sorry about my first post if i sounded harsh :flowers:

destroying nests do not discourage males into not building them. I destroy my guys bubble nest when I clean and they just build bigger ones  At least it does not discourage my males. Sometimes they are just really slow.

hmmm...would they be a wild type maybe? Just guessing because I only read up on Splendens

no worries lilfishie, im used to forums and their harshness..!

im glad i didnt discourage him, i just assumed when websites and books said "nests" they meant little secluded parts of the tank, not a bubble nest. but yes, he does seem very very slow with the building. and i reckon shes getting a little impatient!

its jsut you get so many people mixing sexes, when you know its wrong and will end badly. i'm thinking you have a wild type in which case most are fine together, can you remember the name from the breeder?

he mentioned Pearl being bred in shanghai, and said how he has rare colouring that comes from a variety of types. i'll upload a picture when i can find the camera and get him to hold still!

he's really going to town with his flaring!

There is a very high number of different wild types around. Including Betta Imbellis, The Betta simple, Betta Falx, Mahachai Betta, Betta bellica, brederi, fasciata, picta, pugnax, taeniata, the list goes on. Wild-type fish are much duller in appearance. The fish are generally brown or silver with red and green highlights. They aren’t nearly as colourful as the ornamental types, or so I have read when researching and looking at pictures.

Cant wait to see piccies, the pair sound lovely :good:

i really have fallen in love with them overnight!

the female betta is trying to help rebuild the nest with Pearl, its very sweet. his nest is still rather small bless him!

taken some pictures with 3. megapixel camera phone, just trying to find a lead for the PC off ebay.
