let me just point out that just because someone successfully breeds bettas, it does NOT guarantee good genetics! it guarantees line breeding for whatever trait they are trying to achieve with the spawn. the only difference being that, generally, a private breeder will have less fish to care for at a given time, than a giant commercial farm. Also, the fish will not have to go through shipment, generally so the stock is less stressed and healthier due to environment/limiting stress (and better food doesnt hurt either).
i dont think it is realistic to say that breeders are going to breed for health as opposed to finnage or color. Breeder stock is healthier as they take better care of the fish (generally).
no different than breeding dogs,really and some of the purebred lines are really not very robust anymore, as breeders line-breed for traits. not heath concerns.
