let me just point out that just because someone successfully breeds bettas, it does NOT guarantee good genetics! it guarantees line breeding for whatever trait they are trying to achieve with the spawn. the only difference being that, generally, a private breeder will have less fish to care for at a given time, than a giant commercial farm. Also, the fish will not have to go through shipment, generally so the stock is less stressed and healthier due to environment/limiting stress (and better food doesnt hurt either).
i dont think it is realistic to say that breeders are going to breed for health as opposed to finnage or color. Breeder stock is healthier as they take better care of the fish (generally).
no different than breeding dogs,really and some of the purebred lines are really not very robust anymore, as breeders line-breed for traits. not heath concerns.

i wouldn't buy a dog from a petshop, puppy farming means higher vet bills and poor genetics.

it is not only pet-shop dogs im referring to. but puupy mills are a good comparison of farm-raised fish. even "private breeders" in dogs are in it for the breeding. does not guarantee good health, only a standard (and bloodlines with higher cost/papers etc.-and sometimes not even good standard for the breed's traits. Health issues are everywhere with purebreds. same with many line-bred fish. its the traits you are going for. good health from a breeder is from better care from the onset-not from genetics.

What is a delux betta? i hate it when shops make up names!

Okay, everyone, a Deluxe betta I think is kind of stupid. it is a really rare line that pops into stores every year or so. They almost never have them in. last time I saw the Deluxe bettas, they were Orange bettas, whitch are hard to find, unless you go to a breeder.
The prices our pretty bad, at this hsop, but the bettas are high quality- I have bought over 30 from there and they all lived to at least two with no major health problems. The occasional ich here and there, but always really easy to clear up.
The prices our really bad at Aquariums West, but I love there fish, I will never go any where else.

WOW i would love to see the deluxe betta. So if someone bred a crown tail they would get like $5 for one and bettas have alot of babies so that would be alot wow.

I have no idea, about betta breeders, but I bet Assaye , Oldman, Waterdrop, or one of the Leader of the Fishes know. You should post a new topic concerning that. Where are you located?

My male is an orange butterfly; I saw him and fell in love with him lol...thus starting my betta obsession. I got him from a run of the mill pet shop; and there was two of them in. One with black marbling on him and the other without (I picked the one without; although he does have a tiny bit of marbling, mainly on his 'arm' fins).

Wow! Thats so cool! I've looked everywhere, but no such luck for me!

i'm not breeding yet but i am in talks with someone about a joint breeding venture with my 2 knew girls. fingers crossed x
