g'day everyone.
i was wondering whether anyone has tried to keep a betta with other communal fish in a community tank>
i am currently think about it but im not sure whether it is a good idea considering how sad it would be to loose my fav fishy.
i have a 3 foot tank with platties, cory's, guppies, swordtails and 1 flying fox algea eater.
most of whom are reasonably peaceful (well most of which i have not seen bicker between themselves).
even if they did it was only a little confrontation between one another ussually ending with one fish swimming away and hiding in a corner of plants for a few minutes untill coming out o play.

sorry for the long text but im a bit worried.

Bettas have been known to mistake a guppy's bright colouring for another betta, so you could have problems.

It largely depends on the community and the temperment/personality of the betta. There are lots of considerations. The weight of the betta tail, the temperment of all fish concerned, the swimming ability of all fish concerned.

I had a Betta in with small cories, 20 usg, pandas, skunks, and other small cories. I thought they were fine. I found after he was gone that the pandas now came out to play. He had been harrassing them.

I found this to be true in three cory tanks with three different Betta.

Another problem I repeatedly ran into was the difficulty of treating the the tanks or the Betta. Betta treatments are often different--including the use of fasting, which is sometimes necessary with Betta.

Anyway I have returned to individual housing of my Betta.

I think the majority of people who have tried this have been unsuccessful, including me, there are a few non-aggressive bettas out there, but even if u think they are getting on great with the others, they can always turn on them! Mine was in my community tank for weeks, then one day he just started chasing the others constantly, so i had to reduce him to solitary confinement!

Sparklefuzz is right, they often think guppies are other male fighters, ooops :X

Try it by all means, but be very cautious, one of my mollies has a lump out of her tail where she was just too slow! :(
