Steve built a bubblenest today. I'm thinking about getting him a female. He is a crowntail betta. How do I know what the females are? At petsupermarket they just sell them as "Female betta" I want the female to be a crowntail too, so then Steve's fry will have the fins. He's a really stunning betta, I have to upload some pictures when he's flaring. His body and back fins are a beautiful purple-blue and his two front fins are red. His dorsal fin is also blue with a red tint a the top. I bought him for $6.99 last year lol. I also wanted to ask you guys a question, well I researched up breeding betta. I read for a long time, but I was wondering about the color variations. Are all the fry going to be the same color?

The whole colouration and gene pool thing is an amazing thing, they will be different variations and there will be throwbacks as well as colours emerging from their parents parents. It is complicated and only just got my head around it so not good at explaining!

Steve is happy building bubblenests but it is not necessary to get him a female. It is a lot of work breeding bettas, the female will need a tank of her own, they need to be conditioned and the female taken away after spawning. The male needs to be taken from spawn once they are big enough and the dad can rest. The fry when grown need to be all separated when showing aggression etc and then they alllll need homes, it is a lot of work to ensure all have constant good water quality and feeding them the right and essential foods.

If prepared to do all this and can cope and have the funds then go for it!

I am pretty good at genetics. As for the female, no matter what tail type you get, all the fry will come out what is know as a "Combtail". They will have less reduction like a normal betta, shortening the spikes. So all you babies will get smaller spikes.

As you said he is mainly purple and blue. Which means his main color will be Blue. And what you get color wise all depends on the color of the female.

if you breed 2 ct bettas - you should get CT females and males -- if you breed a hm and a CT you could get some hm-, some ct and a very few comb tails a lot will have runty tails that arent worth anything - the way you then get a comb tail is with line breeding - brother and sisters - with the best tails to carry on with the best combtail line

If you breed a pk female and a male ct - the pk is the prominant gene and once again you could end up with runty bettas

it's best not to mix tail types at all unless you are aiming to develop a specific line like the combtails
