So I wanted to start my first spawn during the upcoming summer. I would start conditioning my babies in early May and begin the spawn then. I've been thinking about this for months now and Im beginning to get everything together. I jus need the grow out tank.

Well in all actuality I wanted to begin spawning them and selling them through eBay. Seeing as I have a eBay account that goes unused and my dream is to own a nice fish business or automotive business lol (two different ends of the spectrum lol) Does anybody have any tips on how to go about beginning this venture?

detailed advertizing is needed, more than one outlet to sell from helps, constant plugging, constant water changes, dont breed bad bettas, spend good money on good bettas, saves on the time on creating the nice bettas thru spawning, go for the unusual colours and genetics..................good luck its all good fun and alot of hard work that sometimes seems endless and the need for therapy never seems far away

sounds like a good idea :) but you would need to sell lots of bettas to make much money. so it'd be good as a hobby. I think you should really do a few accounts or someting on a spreadsheet or databse :S this should help you know when and who you sold the fish to.

also you would need to cull any unwanted babies that people would not buy :(

i don't know that much about ebay though, apart from just checking who the fish are going to (as well as you can). I have an unused ebay account too :shout:

THANX Modaz.. i was hoping you would read this lol

yea i was going to see how my first spawn went and then go from there.. if i was unsuccessful then i would leave it be lol...

i know its possible to sell them to a lfs but i almost refuse to because they dont treat those fish the way they should..

dont cull just because some wont make you money, do what i do and give them away if they are not perfect, there is always someone to give them a good home.
i think its a shame that people suggest culling for the sake of money, the fish should come first and its the breeder who has made them come into the world so i dont see why the breeder should play god. your not gunna tell if they are bad stock until they are much older so its not like a male eating the fry to keep down numbers is it?

dont be put off if the first spawn doesnt work, it takes some mistakes to get it right, we all go thru it so you wont be on your own, chin up if it dont work first time and get planning your second one :good:

i think culling is so harsh.. i was going to do the same thing and give them unwanted fry away to a good home like you said.. i could never kill my own fish...

ooooh thats great to hear, wish you all the luck with your spawns, cant wait to hear about it and see pics too, im getting all over excited again :hyper:  the word spawn does something for me in a wierd way

I can vouch for not giving up first time. We've just had our first spawn and all of a sudden on day 5 lost nearly all of them. We now have 8 left which will be 2 weeks old on Wednesday. It certainly hasn't put us off but we have learnt alot over the last few weeks and will do some things differently next time. Good luck :good:

Have no idea what happened as they were all doing so well. We initially had over 100 hatch. Not sure if it had anything to do with feeding as we were feeding microworms which were fine and also betta starter which we have since found out needs further crushing for the first two weeks, so it may have been that the starter was too big for them. The ones we have left are looking fine but there is a huge difference in sizes. One in particular is 2 or 3 times biggr than the smallest  I'll be over the moon if they survive and given it's our first time it will be easier to raise them than if we had hundreds.

8 is def a big diff. from 100+... so yea it would be alot easier.. but i hope those 8 will do well... what do you think of mixing tail types?

We've used Taro & Sahara from my siggy.....they are both halfmoom. We used them because a place up the road from us wants to sell more unusual tail types as they only have CTs and all the other shops only ever have VTs. I suppose it depends on what type you prefer and what the demand is to be able to sell them on later. Our next spawn will be a male red CT with a red dragon HM female hopefully to produce dragon CTs in about 4 generations.

i seeee... yea ill check around because the stores back home only carry vts or cts.. mostly vts though so ill look into that.. i have a bunch of ct and vts girls along with a pk male nd ct and vt males.. i was thinking about mixing them

What about trying for a PKCT by putting your plakat male with your ct female. I know it's something that a few people are working on getting. It would take a few generations to achieve it, but might make a good project.

that does sound like a good project... hmm... i have a bunch of ct girls (double ray) and one vt girl... im trying to figure out which ones to spawn..
