I recently moved a male betta from a 20L to a 65L tank, and for the first couple of weeks he was fine. However he's behaving oddly recently - doesn't come to the glass when he see's someone there, and now spends most of his time laying under a piece of bogwood. Until today he still eats when he either a) decides to pop up and see whats going on or b) I take the food by hand down to him. He's in a tank with a few ember tetra's and celestial pearl danio's, and they're all fine. Theres no issue with fin nipping - they were within him in the old 20L for about 4 months.

Today I've found him staying well out of the way, and his colours faded massively. I'm testing at the moment, but so far its 0 for ammonia and nitrites. I don't see nitrates as being high either as I did 3 40% water changes within 24 hours 3 days ago, so they should be within normal amounts. I've not done anything to alter the pH (its normally around 7.4) so I'll test it soon, but theres nothing that could have caused a fluctuation. Currently feeding tetramin, flake and bloodworm.

Any ideas?

So you matched temp and ph when you moved him to the bigger tank.
Being pale can be stress to desease.
Are his fins clamped to his body.
He might not like the tank as some betta are funny with large tanks.
Is the current strong in the tank and thats up setting him, as betta don't like strong currents.

Currents not particularly strong, though stronger than last tank. No clamping. I used a bucket to transfer one tank to the other (about a month ago) and added a jug every 5 mins or so until it was a mix of old and new tank water, with the balance being mostly new tank water.

I'll move him into a smaller tank with the old filter and see how he gets on.

Have you posted in the betta sections as alot of experienced members over there.

With shifts and xmas commitments I didn't get everything sorted in time - woke up and found him dead yesterday. Not a mark on him, and stats are good. Suspect it was stress caused by a bigger tank than he was comfortable with along with a stronger current than he's used to. Will never know for sure.

Wish I'd made time to setup and move him into the smaller tank. My other halfs insisting on another betta, so I know better for next time.

Sorry bless him.
Betta's are funny fish some like to be in larger tanks and some don't.
Post in the betta section alot of experienced betta keepers over there.
Good Luck.
R.I.P.
