Iv'e had my Betta [Sparkles] for about 2 years now and he lived most of his happy little life in his little 2.5 gallon heated tank.He had never gotten sick at all in 2 years. I would add about a teaspoon of aquarium salt as per reccomdations from the lfs every time i did a full 100 % water change( about 2 weeks). I recenlty purchased the Ecslipse 6 gallon tank for him about a month ago and stopped adding the salt because i thought it might not be good for him. he seems so unhappy now even with all the extra room. A few nights ago i noticed a medium size white fuzzy spot on his cheek. I dont have any medicine as my fish have never gotten sick so i followed the directions on the salt for a salt treatment to see if it would work before i got medicine. I added a full tablespoon and raised the temp a bit. The next morning the fuzz was GONE and there was a HUGE bubblenest which he hasnt built at all since the move. he use to build them all the time in his old tank with salt.....so im guessing that bettas like salt since he keeps adding to his nest. just wondering if its okay for them to have all the time

aquarium only salt and only the amt listed on package,, bout i teaspoon per gal... seems like he got used to it so why change his tank up? ive keep bettas with salt or without,, it dose seem to help fins from clamping or sticking togather,, and if a fish dose have a infection it can help remove fluid build up for the body, but its not to be used purly as a medication, if they fish has lasting systems and you dont know what it is post a pic here and sombody will probally be able to tell what it is,, and the correct treatment.. :good:

Probably a result of drastic water conditions change. The stress on a fish from moving to different water stats can cause that... So can a larger tank if there is not enough cover. Make sure you have a couple silk or softer plastic plants. A cave would work well too. Security = well being = increased immune system.

Also, you should be changing about 50% of the water in your current tank weekly to maintain absolutely ideal conditions (and who wouldn't want to do that?). 50% every other week would be ok though... certainly not ideal. Keep up with adding the salt though, it obviously is what your betta is used to and is working just fine.

and if a fish dose have a infection it can help remove fluid build up for the body
that is Epsom salt. aquarium salt has the opposite effect referring to dropsy/internal bacteria infections
