I have a 3 gallon tank w/ an under gravel filter in which i keep a betta and an apple snail. A few days ago the snail died suddanly. I'm not really sure why...i was sure to feed him enough. Anyway i was going to get another one but i don't want to put another snail in with my betta if it is a bad idea. Does anyone have any experience with bettas and snails together? If you do...or even have an opinion i'd love to hear what you have to say!

Thanks!

ramshorn snails are better IMO. we use them in our growout tanks with success ;)

I've used them in a growout, but just bought some to use in divided 10 gal tanks with female bettas. The first female flipped the snail over with her nose, and tried to eat it. She acted like she had done it all her life. Her instinct took over. I'm sure some will tolerate them, but that one sure will not.

Is it because less waste, BKK? :dunno:
less waste for sure.
i have also heard horror stories of bettas getting pinched in between shell and snail when getting too curious. mostly though, a long time ago marianne at bcbetta told me that ramshorn snails were better than apple snails and that was good enough for me ;)

we have a female just like you described, certified snail killer, it's unnerving to hear the crunch of an unfortunate shell in between her teeth sometimes. it doesn't seem to hurt her any though, sometimes we will even give her a small snail treat if she is good. lately she has been getting aggressive with my wife, nipping her fingers (on purpose i'm sure)

i used to keep one apple snail in every betta tank but most of them eventually died.
i had 4 that survived only because their bettas were very peaceful and not typical bettas  i eventually took them out though.
i have a few large ones in ym female communities though and they do fine.

bettas like to snack on their "feeler" and then eventually the rest of their body...
but mine were all dime sized or a bit smaller.

just dont go with small ones.
