Hi,
I have just set up my breeding tank and both beta's are in and happy out the male had built his bubble nest and the female has gone very dark in colour all good signs. SO im not too worried on that point. My main concern is out of all the research i have done most have said separate the males into jars, this is my concern as beta's are tropical fish im sure it cant be good for the young males to be in jars. Please couls anyone give me solid advice on this and also remember this is my first time breeding so not everything I do is going to be perfect so please no bullying or the like.

Many thanks

Sarah aka Beta-virgin

You only need to jar the male fry when and if they start becoming aggressive. This is in the later stages of their development, so they won't be in the jars for that long. So long as you keep the water clean, and feed them, they will be fine, temporarily.

Have you got adequate tank space, and enough jars to put the fry into? You could have 70 plus fry, all of which COULD be males. You have to be prepared for this.

yes i have plenty of jars but am looking for extra just in case, I have also arranged withan experienced fish breeder to take the males of me when they are old enough. As i forgot to ask him, how old will they be when you can "re-home" them.

How will you keep them warm? It depends on how quickly the fish grow, however I think roughly about 6 months.

that is my problem, how am i meant to keep 70 jars warm all at the same time

Do you have fry at the moment? Some breeders put them in 2Litre bottles, and simply float them in the tank.

No fry at the moment. I only put the pair together yday, i have everything else ready but a way to keep the males warm I can hardly put them in the linen cupboard, which was suggested to me shockingly enough.

Floating them in tanks is probably easiest.

in 2l bottle of any kind? can i buy a heat lamp and hang it over the jars?

Yeah, cola or whatever. A heat lamp would likely heat the top far more than the bottom, and consequently lead to unequal distribution.

I agree, when i bred mine they were large enough not to get eaten by other community fish and have their colours at this age,

Good look with the fry mate, so exciting seeing what colours they will turn out to be.

great ill try that as I have a 40 g tank which I can float some bottles in as well, it alot harder than i thought it would be tbh

I no im very excited and thankfully, an experienced breeder has agreed to take the males once they are big enough so fingers crossed it will work

Im breeding mine/ conditionin atm

And then im selling them a friend wants 7. Females and a male in a diff tank so ill make a good £30 profit lol

I didnt realise u need to seperate the males when and if they become agressive thanks it gives me more time to find bottles

When i saw this post i was going to suggest floating bottles but ya beat me to it lol

Ive got my whole family saving their bottles lol

All I would suggest is do lots and lots of research from different sites.
Floating the bottles will work kepping them warm, but they will ALL need daily water changes.

Also you will need live foods for your fry, betta fry very rarely accept anything other than live foods :good:
