Hey everyone so my 28 litre tank has a build up of limescale (I think it is) on the light cover. Is there a safe way of removing it without using anything which might harm the fish? Tanks been set up for 6 years.

If you can remove the cover and get it away from the fish tank, you can try soaking it in white vinegar for a bit, or spraying/ wipe vinegar on it and leave for a bit. Then rinse with tap water.

You can use a single sided razorblade and gently scrape the lime off the cover.

Every few weeks I use the hard pad on the back of a kitchen sponge to wipe it down. Make sure its a "plain" sponge with no chemicals impregnated. If you have a large build-up use vinegar as Colin suggested but after that its pretty easy to keep under control.

There's this myth in the hobby not to use any soap or cleaners on aquarium and/or accessories. Now you can use white vinegar and a razor blade, but since it's off the tank and in the sink or the back yard, you can use a cleaner like CLR to easily remove calcium/lime scale - you just need to RINSE WELL.

Footnote: Back in the day when I had all plastic decor/plants, the'd go in the dishwaher with some bleach about once a month! I clean [empty] aquariums and sterlite bins I use to culture daphnia with Dawn dishwashing soap. Sometimes I might use Barkeeper's Friend and a scotchbrite pad - you just need to RINSE WELL.
