I have a 20 gallon which has sat unloved and uncleaned since it's last occupant died over six months ago. it's all full of algae and generally gross. I want to clean it all down before cycling it again. What's the best way? It has gravel, ornaments etc, no love plants. There was no disease as far as I was aware but can't be totally sure. Should I chuck and replace filter media ?

Just give everything a good scrub in very hot water and you should be fine

Salty water and/or vinegar (either can be left to soak for a day or two), then rinse well in plenty of freshwater.

I have just cleaned a 46 gal with about the same things you mentionned to me, washed with hot water+vinegar and a good razor blade.
