Best Value Ferts?

I'm going to buy potassium nitrate, potassium phosphate, magnesium sulphate, ascorbic acid, potassium sorbate and a trace elements mix from www.plantedtanks.co.uk

this? http://www.plantedtanks.co.uk/tff-fertiliser-mix-1675-p.asp

if that's essentially the same as TPN+ then what am i waiting for?!

I'm going to be buying all the elements separately and mixing them together myself however that is basically what I will be making...

Cool. Think i'll buy the 250g bag and see how that goes. Let us all know how you get on with the separate ones!

What "recipe" are you following?

I've been told to mix:

• 48g Potassium Nitrate
• 2.2g Potassium Phosphate
• 17g Magnesium Sulphate Heptahydrate
• 0.5g E300 Ascorbic Acid
• 0.2g E202 Potassium Sorbate
• 5g EDTA Chelated Trace Elements Mix
• 500ml water

IT sounds rather daunting but I'm going to go for it :)

Was that from James' Planted Tank?

There were 3 different recipes and i couldn't work out which one i should use, got very confused and gave up!

I cant click on the planted tank link as on my phone, but i believe its the EI dosing you looked at,the ready put together 1? Quoted from fishyjake to me: The all in one mixture package is the EI method of dosing, when people dose this method they usually dont bother mixing in water lol, they just spoon the powders at seperate times straight into the tank. The reason why not all the stuff is there... is becasue the 2 items missing are essential if you are doing an all in one liquid mixture, the 2 items stop certain ingreiendants reacting with each other making then not work baiscally (in liquid form). so basically that package is designed to be made into either 2 liquid solutions.. keeping the macro nutrients (NPK) in a seperate bottle to the micro nutrients (trace) or to dose as mentioned earlier straight from powder form into the tank (i wouldnt do this until you are used to how the ferts work and the reasons behind why they do it like that )

hope he dusnt mind! Any qs send him a msg hes v helpful :)

It should be mix 3... the other 2 contain a powder which James quotes....

Please remember that the first two formulations contain ammonium and so if you wish to use them please proceed with caution and test on a tank with no livestock in. I haven't tested them and are posted for information only.

Nope hun, dont mind at all :)

Is the EI method essentially when you dose the NPK on some days of the week, then trace elements on other days?

If it's so important to dose them seperately, why do people have such success with an all in one like TPN+?

Basically yes

It isn't important to dose them separately if you have made an all in one mix, i think there is 2 essential reason's to why they are dosed on alternative days.. (EI method)

1. They are added separately to allow one mixture to dissolve before adding the next (hence the alternate days)

2. They dose higher so dosing everyday isn't important.

The way EI works is to overdose so you know for sure that the plants wont be lacking any nutrients throughout any period of a week. At the end of the week a 50%+ water change is done to reset and remove any excess ferts so the whole process can be started all over again.

Hi ya ;)

Ah I see. Thanks fishyjake. So I guess even though TPN+ says to dose once weekly, if you dosed in smaller amounts daily then you can ensure there will be more nutrients available to the plants at all times.

TPN+ says dose once weekly, 1ml/10L, what ratio should you aim for when dosing daily?

Now I'm confused. Should I be mixing everything together or not?

So rather than mixing all of these:
• 48g Potassium Nitrate
• 2.2g Potassium Phosphate
• 17g Magnesium Sulphate Heptahydrate
• 0.5g E300 Ascorbic Acid
• 0.2g E202 Potassium Sorbate
• 5g EDTA Chelated Trace Elements Mix
• 500ml water

Should I mix everything except the trace elements and add them in separately?
