Best Thermometer For The Tank

Using ice is fine i just used and have always used 2 2ltr bottles of pop filled with water that has frozen. The change in temp will be slow as it will Defrost/melt you can expect approx 3-5c drop

Oh, ok then! Thanks for that, I might do it in mine as it's a bit hot for my goldies at the mo :good:

Make sure you put it in a bottle if you do add ice, else you'll need to dechorinate it before you freeze it.

Tank top ups in general dont need to add dechorinate as the volume is so little. On my open top tank the water evaperates weekly i just top up from the tap no problems.

NB: always use dechorinate for water changes though

I think I got it wrong then as I wasn't gonna release the water in the tank, just let the whole thing float around... good job I haven't done it yet as the water isn't quite frozen yet!

I personally wouldnt take the risk, even if other people said it's fine. Not worth risking my hard earned bacteria colony for the sake of half a cap of dechlorinator.

You're not risking anything with a few litres, the concentration of chlorine/chloramine is diluted to the extent that it bears no effect on fish or filter bacteria, if it was on a smaller tank then I'd consider it, but 1-2 litres on a 45 Litre tank is nothing.

I have been doing it for years, the bacteria can multiply a at a very fast rate were talking days, as SBS said as well the amount will be so little it will not effect bacteria in tank of 50L+

Thats the way i do it float the bottle

Ok, so I placed the bottle in the tank yesterday but I don't think the water was fully frozen as it melted after an hour or so. Left the bottle in the freezer overnight and placed in the tank this morning. I checked, it was fully frozen, it defrosted in about 3/4 hours but my temperature only went down by 0.5C!

I only have one 2L bottle I can use but I've added some plastic tubs with water to the freezer. They'll take a while to freeze but, in the meantime, any other ideas of how I can bring the temperature down?
