SO i have a class thermometer in my tank the ones they say are floating. I was wondering what other people use because mine is says that its like 82-86 degrees in there without the heater on just the light. I was wondering if that could even be right. My apt is not that warm. am i reading it wrong?

EDIT- to remove OP's picture - easier to read the thread now

I'm new to this but I was just wondering if this could be a result of the light being on?? I don't switch mine on as the weather is pretty warm around here and the water is warm enough for my cool water goldies already!

I wish it was the light but no its not. where im at it is only 48F out side. in my house its about 68F-70F. And my fish are tropical but i dont want it to warm for them.

What type of lighting is over the tank?

Sorry, I don't mean to be a pest, but how do you know it's not the light? Have you tried to switch it off for a period of time to see if there was a difference??

i also have the same thermometer and wanna know how to read it. me and my hubby were arguing about who was right last night haha

haha i just reread what you first wrote and i was thinking it could be the light that was keeping it that warm, but t night it is still staying warm without the heater and light on. the lights are 15 watt florescent lights 120v...

Do remember that water retains heat a lot better than air does, are you sure the heater isn't on, or have you unplugged it?

its been unplugged for almost 24 hours.... it could just be my house lol but it doesn't feel that warm in here. I just want to cool my water down a lil. any suggestions for that?

nope i have no ice nd that may work for the day but what about the long run. im worried that it is gonna stay like this. I dont know how to fix it. when you read the temp on the pic i posted what is the temp you are reading?

Lol, you look at the red 'liquid' in the centre. Look where it stops at the top and that will tell you what the temperature is.

I'm a newbie but I don't think you should be placing ice inside the tank. As far as I know, temperature changes need to be done slowly and if you add ice, your fish may have a bit of a shock (not quite sure what the actual effects will be though).

What's the ideal temperature for your fish? As for the temperature, I'd also say between 27 and 28C...

EDIT- just seen your latest post, I don't know about fish temperatures but I'm sure someone else more experienced will be able to help.

Using ice is fine i just used and have always used 2 2ltr bottles of pop filled with water that has frozen. The change in temp will be slow as it will Defrost/melt you can expect approx 3-5c drop
