i'm new to this and was planning a on organising a new tank and i need sum help on what tanks and sizes are best, as well as what equipment i would need and the best ones out there. could you also tell me the best hardy fish there are and what fish go well together in a community but are small.

Well the larger the aquarium the easier it is to look after.
If you can have a sump tank as a filter then all the better

but the best thing is tell us what sort of tank u want, corner tank (triangle) normal, bow front.
What size i can go 3ft or 8ft long and how deep u want it.

If money is not object the list of equipment is endless and can start from £50 to £50,000.

For a starter you cant go wrong with African cichlids stick to mubna's only, the love rocky tanks and loads of colours out there to chose from.
Their very hardy fish too and live well in large groups

i was thinking on the scale of a smaller tank, a ten gallon one maybe.

do you know any fish small enuf for a ten gallon? maybe oddball or interesting fish?

if your new to fish keeping your want to stay away from oddball or interesting fish.

Small tanks are very unstable and take a lot of looking after.
Why not get guppies or something once you have cycled your tank.

cycleing a tank is the way to get good bacteria in the tank to remove the toxins and this take around 4 weeks to happen.

this tank is going to be a present for someone who already keeps tropical fish but i am organising it myself and dont hav much experience.

guppies sound lyk a good idea.

If you are buying equipment for an experienced fish keeper, do you know what they like in the way of fish? For me, if someone were to try to gift me a tank and fish, I would really appreciate wild type goodeids with collection information. It would be unlikely that a newbie would be able to source such fish but I would appreciate the attempt. There are lots of fish that might make a good new interest for a 10 gallon for an established fish keeper but an awareness of that person's likes and dislikes would help a lot, along with a current list of the fish that they already have. A present of fish to a true hobbyist is probably a harder thing to do than a jewelry gift to a jewelry afficionado. I don't want to discourage you from doing this as it is something very personal and very much would be appreciated by a true hobbyist. It is just that the choices are very hard to make when you can't get inside the person's head. Can you help us help you with these choices?

They have cories, an angel, platies and a bristlenose plec.
Also interested in black skirt tetra and cardinal tetra, dwarf puffers, loaches, plecs and small gourami.
