Was just wondering, what is the best substrate for plants? I heard sans compacts and damages the roots? So is gravel the best option, also what is aquarium dirt and where can I obtain it for my plants

I can't advise on dirt/soil, as I've never used it, but for simple, low tech plants both sand and gravel are perfectly all right.

Moreso any fish tank sand or playsand work a treat for low tech planted tanks, Good if you have any bottom feeders that would suffer damage from sharp/hard rocky substrate.

I use pool filter sand, propagating sand & course river sand. I have no issues growing plants in these separately or as a layered mix
