Best Plant For A Novice To Grow?

You might want to look at plants such as java moss and java fern, which are both hardy and relatively easy to keep.
Most varieties of Vallisneria are also good plants to start off with and can be used to create a nice backdrop to your tank.

A few more bits of information are needed before we can recommend plants, what is the volume of the tank? How many Watts of light are over it and what type of lighting do you have? (T5's, T8's etc) all relevant info will be printed on the tube.

It's a 4" by 1.5" by 1.5" I'm getting the tank on Saturday of a lad so will tell you the lights and take pic of tank.

You can pretty much grow hornwort, anubias, java fern, java moss, amazon swords in any tank. Low light, med light, high light, it doesn't matter. I'm sure someone else can add to the list.

It depends on the lighting set up, if it's quite high and intense you may need to inject CO2 as the rate of photosynthesis occurring within the plant will be faster due to the higher light intensity, if there is relatively low light over the tank you may need to do nothing at all, as there may be sufficient nutrients being produced by the fish etc.

Is it still possible to have plants still with a under gravel filter?

Plants really don't do well with UG filters; they don't like the current past their roots. You could grow anubias and Java ferm on rocks or bogwood.

My dad always used ugf filters and valis used to grow really well, he would forever be pulling bunches out to give the fish somewhere to swim!
