Which is the best base medium for plant growth?

Gravel?
A mixture of gravel/sand?
Sand?
Something else?
Thanks

A substrate called Eco-complete is very popular here, check the planted section for more info :)

I use a commercially available Laterite mixed with fine unwashed aquarium gravel ( I mean fine, not pea and certainly not sand) Fill base area of aquarium to a depth of around 30mm, Top this off with 40mm of the same fine gravel only this time thoroughly wash it.
Works well for me.

I'd just like to point out that you'd actually be better off with gravel than sand for plant growth. Plants don't tend to do very well in sand.

God Bless,
