Well!?! My 10 gallon is almost done cycling, and the dwarf puffers will have a home in a classroom. What is the best to feed a small DP? The ones at the lfs are only about 1/2 inch long and have very small mouths. What will they eat that isn't too big? WHat do DPs like to eat in general? I have read snails for their beaks and bloodworms. What else? Do they like glassworms or brine shrimp? BBS are awfully small, will they even see them? *sigh* Too many questions!

hey i just got some a week ago they love it frozen brine shimp isnt a great all the time food though its good but it lacks in nutritional value ( i read this on this site check it out dwarf puffers good luck with them

if the puffers are by them selfve ( recomended unless you have a big tank) make sure that wen you feed them its not to much the frozen brine shirp wen you feed it to the the chunks wen the frozen look really small so start out with a dime size and if its not enough add more ( i no this because i made the mistake i though that they would need a lot so i have a peice the size of you second fingure and it was way to much a total waste so start of with a dime size cause when it hit the water it really expands good luck

Well, I usually thaw frozen foods before I feed them to my tanks. I was just wondering if DPs like a variety of foods, and which food are small enough to eat, but large enough to see.

live ghost shrimp. even if they don't eat all of them, the little pink carcasses are easy to find and remove. plus the shrimp are fascinating to watch meander around the tank cleaning.

i don't know of any good frozen foods. i just have an asellus puffer and he eats flakes/snails. although sometimes he also decides that he loves algae wafers and gets very irritable at anyone else who wants a bite  . he also will chew at a shrimp pellet until it gets soft enough for him to slurp. since you have fish at home, i suggest you try feeding a little of all the food you use currently and see what the dwarfs will eat. its not difficult to discover their favorites -- they'll rush to devour it, even if its bigger than their face. i know my puffer regularly tries to eat things that you would think are too big. he just keeps attacking until it breaks or softens to the point he can eat it.

cockles and muscles are good for puffers as there quite tough and can help the beak.

just put a whole 1 in and they'll thrash it around ripping chunks off.

even for dwarves? wow, the little buggers are more ambitious than i thought.

i haven't fed to dwarfs personally, but i'ved fed them to baby red eye puffers at work which enjoy them alot.

Maybe I haven't noticed, but I never see any live shrimp for sale. Where can I find them? I'm not sure if I'll get them though. The kids will love seeing the shrimp in the tank, but I'm not sure what their reactions will be if they see one being eaten alive (5th graders).

This brings up another point: Tankmates (I know, I know). I hear about ottos all the time, but they are herbivores aren't they? The only reason I am thinking of tankmates is for the food that "gets away."

I have read that many DPs only eat food that looks "alive" (moving around an whatnot). Will they eat food off of the bottom? I really can't go searching through the substrate looking for lost bloodworms! I have a 10 gallon with an eclipse hood that has quite the current when it comes to food; it will take any flake passing by and pulls it down. If they eat food from the bottom, no problems. IF not is there anything suitable? What in the world do shrimp eat?

shrimp will eat almost anything; they aren't picky! most LFS sell ghost shrimp for 5 a buck.

if your worried about the kids being sensitive to edible shrimp, i'd completely avoid tankmates. too much temptation and too much potential sorrow.

i imagine that DPs have similar eating habits to SAPs. mine has no compunction to ground cleaning his favorite foods. that's actually the easiest way to tell how much he likes something; he's more than willing to hunt down scraps of his favorites.

After reading about ghost shrimp, I think they'd be better suited for my tank than an otto. I'm not sure if the kids would even notice it! And if they knew in advance that the ghost shrimp were food, I'm not sure if they'd mind too much. There isn't much time for the kids to be staring at the tank. Thing is, I swear I've never seen them! lol I must be blind. Then again, just to prove how UNobservant I am: It took my 2 years to realize that my father-in-law wore a toupee only some of the time! To my defense, he often wore a hat, but he only wore the rug when we went out to dinner (but no hat or rug at our own table) I know, I'm pitiful!
