Hi all,

My Betta developed Fin Rot a few months ago and I'm struggling to stop it. He is pictured in my avatar, but now all the dark thin areas of finnage at the ends of his dorsal, caudal and half his anal fins have pretty much disappeared and continue to recede.

I've been using Waterlife Myxazin along with API Aquarium Salt but this doesn't seem to be working.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Have you been doing water changes everyday?
If you do water changes everyday do you stop when it heals? The reason why I ask is I have a pk that develops fin rot just on a small area of his tail. I change his water regularly and it goes away but soon its back in the same spot. I'm wondering if stress is the main cause to fin rot.

No, weekly...

He's in a 30 litre tank on his own with an air powered sponge filter and a 50 watt heater.

Plus a course of Myxazin is 5 days anyway!

I keep going 3 days after but that is because I get bad break outs at times in my female tank

Do you know how hard your water is? I've heard that ragged fins can be caused by hard water, especially fish that like softer water. If it is very hard then there are ways of softening the water through adding tanins or peat to the filter etc. Otherwise I would give him a break from meds if they're not helping and try doing daily water changes for a while and see if that helps. Then maybe try a different med if necessary.

Your betta looks amazing by the way, do you have any more pics of him?

Hi all,

Sorry I've not kept up with this thread.

I will test the hardness of the water...

I let him have a break from the Myxazin then have been using API Melafix for a while but the poor little guys fins still appear to be slowly reducing.

He's been upgraded to a 60 litre tank on his own, same air driven sponge filter and a 50 watt heater. No substrate now to help with the treatment.

I've ordered some Mardel Maracyn and Maracyn 2 on ebay from some guy in the states. It's impossible to get it in the UK! After reading up on fin rot treatment it appears that is the stuff that's going to do the trick if anything is!

Will let you know how I again on with it once it's made its way across the pond...

The things we do for these little creatures! :D

P.S. Sorry, no more pics! You wouldn't want to see him in his current state anyway!

I had this problem with my male betta not long ago, have a thread on here. I moved him to a 25l tank and out of the 60l he was in. When he was in the 60l I was treating with melafix, nothing happened just got worse. I moved him
To the 25l and give him about 50% water changes everyday for 1 week. I could see a little improvement straight away but i then gave him a 5 day course of myaxzin as he also had popeye. His tail is growing back nicely now :)
Also added a almond leaf into his tank, don't know of this helped but it certainly chirped him up as he started building nests straight away :).

Good luck with him

To answer your question without all the fuss, water change and around 80-82degreeF. If the fin rot already reached the meat, try jungles fungus eliminator. There's hundreds of meds out there, but jungles has worked for me and is cheap compared to most meds. And yes a little salt goes amlong ways as well.

Sorry to hear about your boy. He looks gorgeous in your photo  I really hope that you get this under control soon. Almond leaves are often advised as additions to the water if there's any problems. I hope that your new meds will work wonders :good:
