Hello. I'm thinking of setting up a Mbuna tank in a few months and I'm curious as to what would be the best type of filter for tihs. (e.g. canister, HOTB) I would be using a fifty five gallon or a 75 gallon. If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it. I didn't know whether I should post this here or in Hardware so I posted it in both. Sorry if there's some confusion.

Canisters are probably your best bet. They hold a lot of media, which is a necessity in a mbuna tank. Others may disagree, but a properly maintained UGF isn't a bad idea either. My uncle breeds africans and up until the last 6 months he used UGFs in most of his tanks.

You should get a AquaClear they are easy to clean, reliable, and have loads of room for bacteria. UGF's are always good backup.

undergravel filters can work in mbuna tanks but the main drawback is most people have lots of rock in the tank. The rock covers significant portions of the filter and can make it difficult to gravel clean.
External power filters are a better choice, a couple of big Eheims or Fluvals would do the job.
If the tank hasn't been built yet get a couple of holes put in the bottom and connect it to a trickle filter. They are one of the best filters around.
