hi i got 2 tanks

1 90 liter tank currently has fish in with 4 platys and a fighter
1 30 Gallon(us) tank with nothing in, im not happy with the current filtration but its prooving to be adequate,

can anyone recommend some filters that perform exceptionally, andi dont really have space for an external canister filter so HOB or submerged would be best, thanks guys

Hi, I'll go first but I'm sure someone else will know better.
I've got 2 x Tiger shark power heads for my undergravel filter and a Resun internal cannister filter with sponge/charcoal/amonia medium inside that.
That's worked very well for my 40G tank.

i don't know much about internals but as far as HOB's go i'd deffinitely go with a Hagen Aquaclear or Marineland Penguin of an appropriate size. i have 4 tanks and one or the other is on each of them. i have no problems and they're quiet and pretty cheap too.

I like fluvals personally, I used a fluval 4 + in my old 28 gallon and it was really good, I still use it as a second filter in my 70 gallon now.

I also vote for aquaclear or penguin. I have 2 aquaclear 30's and a marineland 20, very happy with them all.

im thinking of 2 penguin 350s is there such a thing as too powerful a filter, i have frequent fry being born will this be an issue?
thanks

Not usually for platy fry, as they unlike cichlid fry( except mouthbrooders) are born extremely strong swimmers.

I vote for the Marineland Penguin BIO-Wheel filters too! I've had one the old style 330 on each of my tanks for over 7 years now. Excellent filters.

I know I can adjust the rate of flow by moving the intake tube up. The new style 350s I believe have two ways to adjust the flow, again, moving the intake tube up and a separate valve on the tube itself. Check out Marineland's website, they give you a lot of information on them there.

Aqua Clear. I've heard of too many situations where the bio wheel on Marineland products stops turning, and there goes your bio filtration. I torture tested AC hob filters in a breeding setup designed to at least break even every month, if not turn a profit.

Extend the intakes of a hob filter in a deep tank, and do a 50% water change while the filter is still running. If it doesn't continue to run it goes away. Run the same filter in an overstocked tank until the output slows noticibly, and do the same water change. If it chokes it doesn't belong.

If you don't plan on beating the filter half to death, either Marineland or Hagen products will work out fine for you.

Gotta second that, I won't buy any HOBs but aquaclears anymore, they're fabulous. :good:

I really like my Tetra Whisper 30 hang on back filter that came with my 26 USG bowfront tank. It is simple to maintain and the bio-sponge where the bacteria colony sets up shop seemed to work very quickly in combination with the BioSpira I used to get things going. I have also found the Tetra customer support to be exceptional. The intake tube is also adjustable for flow rate.

If I were looking for a replacement, I would, however, also consider the MarineLand products. This is another excellent company (they make BioSpira) and their customer support is also exceptional. I actually use the MarineLand black diamond activated carbon to refill the biobags on my Tetra filter.

Is it true that the Bio wheels never need replacing and is there a noticable difference between a sponge filter and a HOB, What are all you pros using, Canister is it?
thanks
