Hi all,

As the title states, I'm after the best filter I can get for my 110L tank.

I've currently got the standard 400lph internal filter supplied with my Juwel Rekord 800. I'm looking to change this since it takes up quite a bit of room in the tank and I've heard that it's not the best of filters...

The fish I shall have in my tank once it's fully cycled, shall be:

6 Black Neon Tetras
6 Panda Cories
2 Apistogramma Cacatuoides (m+f)
2 Bolivian Rams (m+f)
1 Angel Fish
1 L260 Queen Arabesque Pleco

I'm quite the perfectionist and appearance is vital to me. My water has to be crystal clear and the filter itsself can't be an eye sore.

So what do you advise?

Is it worth going for a filter with a higher output capacity in case I decide to go for a larger tank in the future?

Thanks a bunch,

Ryan :)

i have just brought a Fluval 205 it is brilliant for my tank, i can completely recommend the Fluval 05 filters, they do a great job and a are very quiet and also the water flow is controllable, so if the flow is too strong its very easy to control.

I bought an APS 800lph internal for mine cos 40 Bristle noses is way to much for the standard filter. It creates a strong current, so probably not great for your angelfish, but you could get a lower down model.

Thanks for your speedy replies!

I've heard quite a few good reviews of the Fluval 205, but I've also read some unsatisfied customer reviews... Something to do with the ribbed piping and the actual build quality of the filter?

I don't mind forking out of a top line filter IF it's going to be suitable for my needs, and would cope in a 200L tank (if I upgrade).

Cheers,

Ryan

I stand by the eheim ecco range. Have had 2 and they are great build quality and a great work horse, my water is crystal clear always.

I havent found any problems with the ribbed hosing, the filter itself seems to be a well thought out design to make cleaning and maintenance easy. As i say i havent found a problem with the filter yet.

Youll always get bad reviews on everything. Theres always that 1 person who complains about the most picky things. If 80% reviews are good then i would go for that item.

I used the Fluval 205 and although I found it to be ok on a 180ltr tank, I found the 305 did a much better job.
I'd definitely recommend the Fluval 305 from personal experience, especially if you're looking tp upgrade soon. Bigger is better :)

Can't comment on other makes as I've only used Fluvals.

I have the fluval 205 for my 120 Litre tank, it's an excellent filter imo and a bargain for what it is.

You can simply close the pipes off, disconnect and open the filter up to clean wherever suits, it's brilliant.

Thanks again all!
I'll have a look into the 305 and compare it against the 205. I've seen the 205, brand new for £56.

What are they both like regards sound? Obviously, quieter the better.

Any other suggestions to the table folks?

Ryan

Both the 205 and the 305 were really quiet, no complaints about them at all.
Same with the FX5 I now have, apart from a slight hum I don`t even know it`s running :D

I've also got a Fuval 205 in my 125 liter tank and it seems to do a awesome job, no complaints from me.

It is rather noisy for the first few days, i wrapped a blanket round mine to soften the noise, now i dont even notice it, and its about 2 feet away from my bed

So, three options here:

Fluval 205 - £56
Fluval 305 - £74
Fluval FX5 - £138

I'm opting towards the 305 since it sits nicely in the middle and isn't that much more than the 205.

Again, anyone else that can name a filter to match the 305 of a similar price?

I'm going to be using the Rena Xp1 on my 55 gallon Set up with a emperor 280 HOB. I've seen one in operation at my friends tank and it was quiet and pretty easy to maintain (watched him clean his black filter pads). And I got one for under 60 bucks on sale! :good:

Well since I'm quite a novice when it comes to this aquarium malarky, what would you advise for a beginner?
