Best Community Fish For A 40Gal?

title says it all. What are some really cool community fish for a medium (3ft, 40gal) tank?

As some fish prefer tall ones, but active fish prefer long ones.

Id say its regular, 36in x 12in x 18in tall

Not a 40g only a 28g UK mate and 34 gallon US

I'm afraid that a tank 36X12X18 would not be 40 Gal, it's only 127L which would be 34US Gal and thats before you take into acount any decoration or subtrate.

There are plenty of fish that could go in there though, but it depends on personal preferance really- what sort of fish do you like? I prefure fish with a bit more bulk so i think most barbs are brilliant but i really don't like things like neons or rummy rose tetras (never kept them mind this is only looks). However i really like the way my Paradise fish is so self assured- he's happy to swim right in the middle of my Rosy barbs (who are all manic just like any other barbs I've seen) and it doesn't phase him(he just expects them to move out his way), but there are plenty of timid fish around that some people prefure. I also have to be careful what i put with the Paradise fish because he's a bit of a brute with flowing finned fish but I quite like the bit of agression as it isn't excessive and it doesn't bother the Rosy's any way- they're too interested in what they're doing to care. Well thats a few fish at least but the only one I would call an 'ideal' community fish would be the Black Ruby barbs- they don't nip, plenty of character and not picky so mix well with other species. The Paradise fish is a bit too agressive to say ideal because i wouldn't be able to put in any flowy fish and the Rosy's need a lower temperature than most. (I don't know anythign of the neons or the rummies)

I have a 34 US Gallon aquarium that seems similar in shape to the one you are describing (30"L x 12.5"D x 22.5"H) that I will be populating in the next couple months. I am thinking of the following combination (primarily because they are peaceful as well as hardy fish .. good for a beginner):

1 pair of Pearl Guoramis
3 fancy guppies
6 Emperor Tetras
6 Panda Corydoras

I'm a fan of platys swordtails and tetras ( I like cardinals most of tetras)
My tank is 30 gal and I've got platy swordtails cardinals bristlenose pleco and clown loach

My tank is 30 Gal also and I have, or have had at some point : a bristlenose pleco, a clown pleco, corydoras, a betta, dwarf gourami, rainbowfish, platies, danios and tetras. Lots of options for you, any ideas what sort of thing you like?

Do you want a community? Do you want to breed? Any fish thata re a 'must have'? What are your water stats (ph, hardness)
