What would be the best eheim canister filter to run along with my ac110 on my 105 gallon tank? It contains an oscar, convict, and firemouth, and a common pleco (I'm giving the plec away soon because the oscar bullies it).

I would say the Proffessional 3 one, which is electronically controlled.

There is supposed to be another version out soon.

I'd say an Eheim 2217, It can handle about 160 gallons and has a 264 gph. I think that's pretty good for a tank about your size.

Fluval FX5. Easily cope with that, not too expensive (unlike Eheims - argh!), and completely silent. Dead easy to run too.

I get mixed reviews about this filter. Some love it, some hate it. Isn't it a bit overkill though?

Not with your fish and your size tank, you'll need something that capable. I've had mine a year now, with no problems at all :) Started off on my 115g tank (which had an oscar, plec, and other fish in at the time), and is now on my 180g tank (4 plecs, two baby sevs, two baby festivums in there - with an internal running too for the bubbles).

Remember with oscars you need to do around 10x filtration, and with a plec in there too - you'll need the most powerful you can get. Some folks use pond filters for their oscar tanks, might be worth looking into?

get a eheim 2224 to run along side your existing one, they arent that expensive, i payed £60 for mine :)

How about the eheim 2260? It pumps 502 gph and that coupled with my aquaclear 110 should do the job right? The store I usually get my fish stuff from doesn't have it in stock, and actually I've never seen it in stock there, but they have to 2260.

A 2260 will be wonderfully overfiltered, something that is needed with that tank. :good: Actually, a 2217 will do the job, with an added hob. That AC 110 is underfiltered for a tank like that, messy plecs & cichlids need at least double that. No doubt the 2260 will make up for it.

Fluvals are the best, and are very often used for turtle tanks, which are even messier than Oscars. The only problem with fluvals is about 1 in every 10 of them need to be replaced within 6 months. If you get a good one, it'll last for many years, but otherwise it could be a waste. The second best filter is the Rena XP3, similar to the Fluval, but less media room and they won't need to be replaced as often. Be warned, both of these filters have VERY powerful intakes, especially the Rena. I think there's something covering the intake on both filters so no fish get sucked up, but that piece has been known to come off, and many turtles have died from getting a head stuck in there, or a foot. I'm not sure how this would affect fish, though.

Aside from the 2260 don't expect and Eheim to be a good mechanical filter. They are excellent bio filters though. I have had a 2217 running for years and its still pretty much silent and trouble free.....but for your size tank definately get that 2260 if you can afford it!!!

Yeah my aquaclear 110 will get the mechanical filteration done, and the 2260 will be for bio filteration.

the fluval fx5 is garbage, I went through 2 of them before I finally realised you get what you pay for, went and got an eheim professional II, best filter Ive ever run, by far.
