Benefits of a substrate heater

I have the opportunity to buy a substrate heater....total cost of $79 (excluding shipping) suitable for a 40gal tank (I have a 30gal tank so it will be sufficient).....

How will it help me grow a nice planted tank? Is it really worth spending the money on?

I am also buying some laterite as well....by the time it gets here it will be Tuesday so looks like next weekend is going to be one busy "rebuilding my planted tnak" weekend......
