How long can beneficial bacteria survive without ammonia? Reason I ask I'd because I wasn't home last night to add ammonia to my cycling tank. I added 4ppm on Thursday morning and didn't add any today. I won't be back to add ammonia till about 9 or 10 tonight. My biofilter can process 4 ppm in about 12 hours or so. Will they be able to survive til then?

Will be fine you may loose a little but in the grand scheme of things your not going to loose a great deal. 20%? if that. I asked this question when I was going to leave my tank for 3 days and I think at most it was going to be 40ish percent. But some of the more experienced people will be able to jump in and give you a better idea :)

The link above was to a similar question I asked and people advised 10peecent per day. Have a read Waterdrop gave some good info along with everyone else :)

the bacteria can multiply by 50% in 24hrs if there is enough ammonia/nitrite for them to feed on. So within a day your filter bacteria colony should be back to 'full capacity'

Thanks for all the help. I've calmed down.

I was like that when I drained the tank on the day of getting fish then the LFS called saying they only had 1 fish in so it was a case of dosing it and doing another large water change or leave it. In the end I just added the ammonia and changed the water again 3 days later lol

It was stressful for me too! When you've put in the work to fishless cycle, the days you finally switch over to fish can't help but be a big deal!

It's nice though ain't it WD when you have the bags of fish acclimatising in the tank :) just got 3 more synos the other day a different king to the petricola know as the cuckoo catfish. Pic in the my fish thread chugged with my fish I must say! Still to do filter maintenance think I'll do that on sat for the first time!
