Beginner Looking To Get Into Cichlids

I'm a relative beginner- I kept some Oscars and Firemouths when I was a kid- but i'm getting back into it now.
I have some general questions..
 
1- I have a new 75 gallon set up with some danios and tetras and plants just to get the ball rolling.
 How long should I wait before getting into Cichlids?
2- can anyone recommend a good book about cichlids in general?

I take it you want to keep american cichlids?

Actually I'm siding more towards african. Malawi's seem to grab me.

If thats the case then you would need to start from scratch and just keep those type of fish. cheers

Yes, I know.. starting from scratch. Just wanted to know if there are any good resources out there about these fish so I'm better prepared, for their sake and mine!
