I got this tank back from repairs only a week ago. I bought a nice smooth plank (of pine wood) cut exactly to the stand size and placed this below the tank before filling her up.

The tank is set up outside and we had a rainstorm which soaked the wood, which then started swelling below the full tank. The strength of the swelling wood lifted the full tank to the extent that the (now) warped base actually cracked the bottom glass of the tank and almost tilted the tank right off the stand.

I wonder if it would help if I weathercoat the plank (a new one obviously) with Varnish before I fill up the tank (when it comes back from repairs this time)

I was so disappointed.

looks like a gorgeous piece of wood, sadly didnt meet your requirements.. would concrete slabs be a silly idea in its place?

The pine is your problem, its not a very strong material, try some marine ply wood, it will be alot stronger, and it will not buckle like that, and it will still have a grain like a natural wood :D
Just incase you didnt know.
