is it ok just to leave the media from a friends filter, floating in my tank or do i need to put it in my filter to speed my cycle?

you should put it in you filter

Agreed with mark.

You would prob get away with just putting it in the tank but it would take much longer to seed.

Once of the main requirements for good bacterial growth is water flow so with the media in the filter you have a steady current passing through.
